TWO (KNUCKLE) HEADS COLLIDE: What is wrong with the Cavaliers?

In today's issue of The Bryan Times, Lee Hudnell and I debated, what is wrong with the Cleveland Cavaliers in their Eastern Conference finals matchup with the Orlando Magic?

You've heard what we had to say. Now what do you think?

Mike Brown is choking more than Stave "The Man" Van Gundy. I believe this because hes not matching up with orlando's personnel. Ilgauskas should not be playing because he is too old and cannot move on defense to guard orlando's centers and is not producing on offense. Also, Mike Brown is not playing his bench players like he did during the regular season. The head coach should be using certain players for certain situations and Mike Brown has not figured that out even after coaching a full NBA season. What Mike Brown should do is play Varejao one on one with Dwight Howard. NO DOUBLE TEAMS. Make dwight howard go to the foul line, and give up no three pointers. Only double howard unexpectedly. On the offensive side I would run a high post offensive that way Howard has to play at the top of the key and look for back door cuts for dunks and layups. This is so easy a caveman can do it.

  2. I agree the Cavs 3 shooting is killing them. If they can start hitting they will come back in this series. They are outscoring the Magic inside so all they need to do is knock down some treys.

  4. Cavs hit 50 percent from 3-point range ... win by 10! I rest my case.

  5. Lee, you never had a case. I'm pretty sure I won that debate. Just like I'll win the next trillion. Anyways, the Magic NEED to win Game 6. If they don't, this series is over.

And I agree with old man basketball, the Cavs should not double-team Howard. He's really not a good enough offensive player to deserve one. All he can do is dunk or dribble across the lane and throw up something ugly.

  6. I think it is funny that there is a "Lee Hudnell" on here talking trash. The funny thing about it is, that person isn't me. LOL!

    Can't say I disagree with him/her though!

If the Cavs are going to get this thing to Game 7, they need to spread the floor, put LeBron at the foul line circle and allow him to do his thing inside, whether it's kicking it to an open man when Orlando collapses on him, or taking it to the hole when he's getting manned up. He could put Howard in foul trouble within a few possessions.

Oh yeah, and they must hit their shots from downtown!!!

Nate, my man — keep dreaming!!! :-)

If lebron is "The Man", then let him guard some real players such as mmmmmmmmmm Dwight howard, 3-point shooter Hedo Turkoglu, or even Rashard Lewis, instead of guarding rafer alston(???) or courtney lee(wow). Jordan always out-played clyde drexler in '92. Russell always (ALWAYS) guarded Wilt Chamberlin. Jerry West and Walt Frasier always guarded one another. So if Lebron wants to be the best of the best, make him guard the best of the best. "I rest my case."

  8. Old Man, you need to go slap them old school rec. specs back on and see what's going on out there on the court ;-)

If you can put aside your obvious bias against LeBron, you would see that he has guarded pretty much every Magic player on the floor in this series. Did you not see the swat James put on Howard? Besides, Howard is never going to be in a game long enough to consistently score 30 anyway, so why waste LeBron on him when you can just have Z, Varejao, and Wallace slap him around for 18 fouls a game?

Oldie, if you can't see what LeBron James has done (and at 24 years of age) then you are BLIND — or bias.

I hate to beat this into the ground, but ... it doesn't matter what happens, this guy should guard that guy, this dude can't check that dude ... who cares? If the Cavs can hit their open shots from deep, this series is history my Old brother!

If not, LeBron's going to be watching the finals from his throne — in Akron.

  9. Old man basketball...I'm with you on the fact that LeBron should man up and guard the best players, but like Kobe does in close games, LeBron does usually guard Lewis or Turkoglu. Just like Kobe guards Chauncey or Melo.

And a reporter did ask LeBron if he could guard Dwight Howard and he said that he couldn't because he tried during the Olympics and Howard was too much for him.

And Lee, most of LeBron's swats come from behind, just like the one on Howard.

Anyways, the Magic better win Game 6 because I don't like the Cavs.

  10. Nate,

LeBron's block on Howard was from behind??? Copy and past the address below (sorry, it wouldn't allow me to link):

Good observation Nate!!. i'm pretty sure i could swat lebron from BEHIND!! anyone can swat anyone from behind..and you need to put your glasses on my friend(lee), because lebron has guarded lee and alston the WHOLE series. The only time he guards turk and lewis is when orlando pushes it and they don't have time to get to the people they are supposed to guard. Also, when did i ever say lebron isn't good. I just said that hes not quite "the man" yet. He still has some things to prove before he gets that title. I am not biased at all against lebron. I just want to see him step up and guard some of the better players. Finally, Howard does not need to score 30 pts a game when turk and lewis are dropin 20-30 pts.

  12. the block was from the blind side, which is basically from behind. there is no way howard could see lebron coming.
